Abstract:

 

This tutorial’s target audience is students and engineers who would like to understand what is IoT and what are the prominent applications areas for it.

We will explore various components of the IoT system and a detailed architecture common to most of the IoT system.

 

This will be followed up by a detailed case study (Smart Parking system) that demonstrates how to build an end-to-end IoT system.

 

Speaker Bio:

 

Umesh Puranik has 24 years of experience in embedded systems, networking and communication, end-point security, etc.

He is passionate about designing complete products including hardware design to applications.

He is working as a Principal Architect at Persistent Systems Ltd. He has been associated with NCRA-TIFR, Cirrus Logic, nVidia in the past.

Abstract

 Retrieval Search engines have become part of almost everybody’s day to day life. Information retrieval (IR) system is the building block of a search engine and in recent years significant progress in IR have been observed. This tutorial aims at introducing and summarizing basics of IR and glimpse of some cutting edge techniques in IR.

 

The tutorial consists of two parts. In the first part, we introduce the fundamental techniques of IR such as document feature extraction, document indexing, query expansion, query term weighting and similarity based ranking. The second part consists of a hands-on session: where we use open source tools to put together an IR system using a publicly available dataset. This tutorial is aimed at somebody who is interested in knowing about and developing an IR system.

 

 *Prerequisites

 We will take the last one hour for the hands-on session.


 Intention of the hands-on session: Participants will be taken through the steps sample document indexing, retrieve and rank the results. We will use “Retrieve and Rank” service available in “Watson Development Cloud” for this session.


 

 The following are the prerequisites for the hands-on session:

 

1.     A Bluemix account. If you don't have one, sign up


2.     Install Java Development Kit version 1.7 or later


3.     Install Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developersnd, c


4.     Install the Watson Development Cloud SDK from https://github.com/watson-developer-cloud/java-sdk/releases(use the file “java-sdk-3.4.0-jar-with-dependencies.jar", available under “Downloads”)

Name : Karthik Sankaranarayanan, IBM Research - India

 

Bio : Krthik Sankaranarayanan is Research Staff Member working at IBM Research - India since 2011. His interests span various application areas of machine learning from computer vision, text analytics to natural language processing. More recently, his research has been focused on Question Answering systems with a focus on (semi) structured data. He obtained his Ph.D from The Ohio State University in 2011 working at the intersection of machine learning and object detection and tracking applications in computer vision.

 

Name : Saravanan Krishnan, IBM Research – India

 

Bio : Saravanan Krishnan is Research Software Engineer at IBM Research – India since 2014. His research interests are natural language processing, mono and cross lingual information retrieval, information extraction, machine learning and data mining. He got M.E. (computer science & engg) in 2005 and M.Sc. (computer science) in 2000 from College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University, Chennai. Before joining IBM Research, he worked at Microsoft Research India as Software Development Engineer during 2006 and 2012, and Anna University as Project Associate during 2000 and 2005.

Let’s find out what is machine learning, where and how is it used and why big companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, IBM and many more are investing heavily in machine learning research and applications. Machine Learning Essentials is a quick tour of most widely used machine learning algorithms for regressions analysis, classification and clustering techniques with special emphasis on data exploration, preprocessing, learning curves, validation techniques and Ensemble Learning..

 

 

Speaker Bio:

 

Bhushan Garware works as a Project Lead in Learning and Development at Persistent Systems Ltd. He has submitted Ph.D. thesis in the Department of Technology at University of Pune in the field of fingerprint biometrics which is in line with India’s most prestigious AADHAR project. He has filed one US patent and two Indian patents are published in the area of interoperability issue in fingerprint recognition systems. He also works as a visiting faculty for Machine Learning in the Computer Science Department of Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, Pune. Bhushan has completed graduation (B.E.) in Electronics & Tele Communication from Mumbai University and Masters (M.Tech.) in VLSI & Embedded Systems from College of Engineering (COEP) Pune. His research interests include Biometrics, Image Processing and Computer Vision.
